The 10 Best College Towns and Cities

Boston SquareI loved going to college in Norman, Oklahoma. The city is definitely a college-town and I think it is one of the best places in the world to go to college. However, Unigo.com had a different opinion.

According to them, Boston is the best city in the USA for students to go to college. Why?

“Often, friends and I would go around the city to eat in Boston’s ‘little Italy’ the North End, or catch a Red Sox game, or go to a local bar and shoot pool,” said Rachel, a theater major at Boston University. “The benefit, for me, of going to college within a city was there never seemed to be a shortage of anything to do.”

That makes sense to me. Although BU does not have a traditional campus, there are more than 50 other colleges in Boston, so you can have that academic environment or enjoy living and studying amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.

The next city that made the list is Charleston, South Carolina. This city is located close to a beach and is also a tourist hotspot.

“Charleston is a vacation destination for many people, so it is cool to live in a place other people are only lucky enough to visit,” said Andrea, a biology major at the College of Charleston.

Some other cities that made the list include New York City (New York University) Berkeley, California (The University of California at Berkeley), Boulder, Colorado (University of Colorado at Boulder), and Austin, Texas (The University of Texas). These cities usually receive recognition for being good college towns, so it’s not really surprising that the made the list. However, there are a few more cities that might surprise you.

Coming in at fourth place was New Orleans, which is home to Tulane University. What’s so great about attending Tulane and living in New Orleans?

“The best thing about Tulane is definitely being in New Orleans and the nightlife associated with that,” said a sophomore at the school. “There is a lot of great music in New Orleans and a lot of really yummy places to eat. Off campus I go to bars and restaurants within walking distance.”

Eugene, Oregon, was another surprising addition to the list. Unlike the other cities that have been listed already, this is a smaller town and has the college-town-feel down pact.

“The UO is the best campus I’ve ever seen,” said Katie, a sophomore at the University of Oregon. “It’s a perfect college town, has enough people in attendance to get lost if you want and not too many to remain that way forever. There’s enormous school pride, and the vibe on campus is a positive one. I don’t want to go anywhere else.”

The last two cities on the list are Burlington, Vermont (The University of Vermont) and Madison, Wisconsin (The University of Wisconsin).

Did your town make the list? If not, tell us what makes your college town special in the comments section below.
